Toward a generalized developmental model of psychopathological liabilities and psychiatric disorders

Background
Most psychiatric disorders are associated with several risk factors, but a few underlying psychopathological dimensions account for the common co-occurrence of disorders. If these underlying psychopathological dimensions mediate associations of the risk factors with psychiatric disorders, it would support a trans-diagnostic orientation to etiological research and treatment development.
MethodAn analysis was performed of the 2012–2013 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions III (NESARC-III), a US nationally representative sample of non-institutionalized civilian adults, focusing on respondents who were aged ⩾21 (n = 34 712). Structural equation modeling was used to identify the psychopathological dimensions underlying psychiatric disorders; to examine associations between risk factors, psychopathological dimensions and individual disorders; and to test whether associations of risk factors occurring earlier in life were mediated by risk factors occurring later in life.
ResultsA bifactor model of 13 axis I disorders provided a good fit (CFI = 0.987, TLI = 0.982, and RMSEA = 0.011) including an overall psychopathology factor as measured by all 13 disorders and 2 specific factors, one for externalizing disorders and one for fear-related disorders. A substantial proportion of the total effects of the risk factors occurring early in life were indirectly mediated through factors occurring later in life. All risk factors showed a significant total effect on the general psychopathology, externalizing and fear-related factors. Only 23 of 325 direct associations of risk factors with psychiatric disorders achieved statistical significance.
ConclusionMost risk factors for psychiatric disorders are mediated through broad psychopathological dimensions. The central role of these dimensions supports trans-diagnostic etiological and intervention research.
First 1000 days: New Zealand Mothers’ perceptions of early life nutrition resources

Research into associations between early life nutritional exposures and vulnerability to adult non-communicable disease (NCD) highlights the importance of maternal diet. A booklet outlining evidence-based dietary guidelines for the first 1000 days of life was first published in 2016 by early life nutrition experts for distribution to pregnant women in Australia and New Zealand. First-time New Zealand mothers’ (n=9) perceptions of the booklet and its relevance for the future health of their child were explored via semi-structured focus groups and interviews. Recruitment took place via social media channels and antenatal classes around Auckland. Three major themes were identified using thematic analysis: 1. A difference in the ways mothers related to the booklet depending on their apparent level of health literacy and communication preferences; 2. A tendency for women to outsource decision-making to nutrition ‘rules’, rather than interpreting information to suit personal circumstances; 3. Intense pressure to comply, resulting in feelings of shame or guilt when the ‘rules’ were not followed. In this study, first-time mums expressed feeling under pressure to ‘get it right’ and identified a desire for more support from healthcare providers and society. Nutrition education is essential; however, a booklet should provide a starting point for conversation rather than a stand-alone list of recommendations. Further exploration is needed to develop a resource that can be used by health professionals working alongside women and their partners to support healthy child development.
Identifying rhenium substitute candidate multiprincipal-element alloys from electronic structure and thermodynamic criteria

While rhenium has proven to be an ideal material in fast-cycling high-temperature applications such as rocket nozzles, its prohibitive cost limits its continued use and motivates a search for viable cost-effective substitutes. We show that a simple design principle that trades off average valence electron count and cost considerations proves helpful in identifying a promising pool of candidate substitute alloys: The Mo–Ru–Ta–W quaternary system. We demonstrate how this picture can be combined with a computational thermodynamic model of phase stability, based on high-throughput ab initio calculations, to further narrow down the search and deliver alloys that maintain rhenium’s desirable hcp crystal structure. This thermodynamic model is validated with comparisons to known binary phase diagram sections and corroborated by experimental synthesis and structural characterization demonstrating multiprinciple-element hcp solid-solution samples selected from a promising composition range.

Modern approaches to alloy design increasingly exploit the framework of computational thermodynamics and kinetics to guide the selection of alloy compositions and processing strategies, to achieve desired microstructures, and yield tailored properties. In this context, phase diagrams play a critical role and their assessment can represent a bottleneck in the design of new multicomponent systems. In recent years, it has become possible to accelerate this process through the coupling of the CALculation of PHAse Diagram (CALPHAD) computational thermodynamics framework with high-throughput quantum mechanical calculations. This article reviews recent developments and applications in this area, and discusses future opportunities for high-throughput calculations in the context of modeling kinetics, highlighting the important role of interfacial processes and atomic mobilities.

Experiments were conducted at 12 locations in North Carolina and Virginia to determine soybean response to postemergence application of 2,4-DB in combination with 420 g ae ha-1 of sodium salt of acifluorfen, 13 g ae ha-1 of ethyl ester of chlorimuron, and 70 g ae ha-1 of ammonium salt of imazethapyr. Adding dimethylamine salt of 2,4-DB at 35 or 70 g ae ha-1 to acifluorfen, chlorimuron, or imazethapyr increased soybean injury 2 to 14% 7 d after application. Soybean quickly recovered and no injury was observed 21 d after application. Acifluorfen, chlorimuron, or imazethapyr alone or in combination with 2,4-DB at 35 g ha-1 did not reduce soybean yield. Adding 2,4-DB at 70 g ha-1 reduced yield at four of the 12 locations.

Compositional imaging of several immiscible polymer blends was examined with the combination of AFM-based mechanical and electric modes with chemically-specific Raman mapping. Results showed that these methods substantially complement each other in comprehensive characterization of surface morphology by helping to identify a composition of top surface and sub-surface materials in polymer heterogeneous systems.

Crystal and interfacial structures of oxide nanoparticles in 16Cr-4Al-2W-0.3Ti-0.3Y2O3 ODS ferritic steel have been examined using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) techniques. Oxide nanoparticles with a complex-oxide core and an amorphous shell were frequently observed. The crystal structure of complex-oxide core is identified to be mainly monoclinic Y4Al2O9 (YAM) oxide compound. Orientation relationships between the oxide and matrix are found to be dependent on the particle size. Large particles (> 20 nm) tend to be incoherent and have a spherical shape, whereas small particles (< 10 nm) tend to be coherent or semi-coherent and have a faceted interface. The observations of partially amorphous nanoparticles lead us to propose three-stage mechanisms in order to rationalize the formation of oxide nanoparticles containing core/shell structures in as-fabricated ODS steels.

The gallium-stabilized Pu-2.0 at. % Ga alloy undergoes a partial or incomplete low-temperature martensitic transformation from the metastable δ phase to the gallium-containing, monoclinic α′ phase near -100 °C. This transformation has been shown to occur isothermally and it displays anomalous double-C kinetics in a time-temperature-transformation (TTT) diagram, where two nose temperatures anchoring an upper- and lower-C describe minima in the time for the initiation of transformation. The underlying mechanisms responsible for the double-C behavior are currently unresolved, although recent experiments suggest that a conditioning treatment—wherein, following an anneal at 375 °C, the sample is held at a sub-anneal temperature for a period of time—significantly influences the upper-C of the TTT diagram. As such, elucidating the effects of the conditioning treatment upon the δ⟶α′ transformation can provide valuable insights into the fundamental mechanisms governing the double-C kinetics of the transition. Following a high-temperature anneal, a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) was used to establish an optimal conditioning curve that depicts the amount of α′ formed during the transformation as a function of conditioning temperature for a specified time. With the optimal conditioning curve as a baseline, the DSC was used to explore the circumstances under which the effects of the conditioning treatment were destroyed, resulting in little or no transformation.

Under ambient conditions, a Pu-2.0 at.% Ga alloy is retained in the metastable δ phase. Upon cooling to approximately -120 °C, the face-centered-cubic δ phase partially transforms to the metastable monoclinic α′ phase via a martensitic transformation. The kinetics of the δ⟶α′ transformation are reported to have double-C curve kinetics in a time-temperature-transformation (TTT) diagram, but the mechanisms responsible for this unusual behavior are not understood. Our work focuses on determining the underlying cause of the two noses. Optical microscopy has been used to investigate the role of “conditioning”—an isothermal hold at sub-anneal temperatures—on the δ⟶α′ transformation and to illuminate any disparities in transformation products. Conditioning was found to affect substantially the amount of transformation that occurs at particular points corresponding to both the upper- and lower-C of the TTT diagram.

The Aurora programme is the European Space Agency programme of planetary exploration focused primarily on Mars. Although the long-term goals of Aurora are uncertain, the early phases of the Aurora programme are based on a number of robotic explorer missions – the first of these is the ExoMars rover mission currently scheduled for launch in 2013 (originally 2011). The ExoMars rover – developed during a Phase A study – is a 240 kg Mars rover supporting a 40 kg payload (called Pasteur) of scientific instruments specifically designed for astrobiological prospecting to search for evidence of extant or extinct life. In other words, ExoMars represents a new approach to experimental astrobiology in which scientific instruments are robotically deployed at extraterrestrial environments of astrobiological interest. Presented is an outline of the design of the rover, its robotic technology, its instrument complement and aspects of the design decisions made. ExoMars represents a highly challenging mission, both programmatically and technologically. Some comparisons are made with the highly successful Mars Exploration Rovers, Spirit and Opportunity.

To prevent nuclear criticality in spent fuel storage, transportation, and during disposal, neutron-absorbing materials (or neutron poisons, such as borated stainless steel, Boral™, Metamic™, Ni-Gd, and others) would have to be applied. The success in demonstrating that the High-Performance Corrosion-Resistant Material (HPCRM) can be thermally applied as coating onto base metal to provide for corrosion resistance for many naval applications raises the interest in applying the HPCRM to USDOE/OCRWM spent fuel management program. The fact that the HPCRM relies on the high content of boron to make the material amorphous – an essential property for corrosion resistance – and that the boron has to be homogenously distributed in the HPCRM qualify the material to be a neutron poison.
Changes in Delta-Plutonium Due to Aging as Observed by Continuous in-situ X-Ray Scattering

The aging in plutonium is predominantly caused by its internal self irradiation. The self-irradiation in Pu-239 is by the decay process of transmuting the Pu atom into uranium atom and emitting an α-particle. Most of the lattice damage comes from the uranium recoil resulting in Frenkel type defects consisting of vacancies and self-interstitial atoms, helium in growth and defect clusters and possibly even though it is not yet observed, the generation of voids. As part of the stockpile stewardship, it is important to understand the changes in the structure and microstructures and their correlations to the physical properties. Changes in the physical properties has direct relationship to the quality of the structure, in terms of formation of defects and defect clustering, accumulation of voids, grain boundaries, phase changes and etc. which can adversely affects the stability of the material. These changes are very difficult to monitor because of the high activity of the sample, high atomic number making x-ray and synchrotron probe into the bulk very difficult (neutron probe is not feasible) and the long life time which normally requires decades to measure. In this paper we describe the development of an in-situ in-house transmission x-ray diffraction (XRD) experimental technique used to monitor the structural changes in these materials. This technique calls for a very thin sample of less that 2 μm and to accelerate the aging process due to self-irradiation, spiked alloy of 7.5 weight percent of Pu-238 is used. This is equivalent to roughly 17 times the normal rate of aging. Current results suggest that over a period of 2.8 equivalent years, an increase of 0.5% in unit cell parameter is observed. The increase appears to be an abrupt jump at about 1.1 equivalent years, brought about by the collapsing of the atoms from the interstitials to the lattice sites. Further data analysis is on the way.

The investigation of the actinides is of great interest because of their unique electronic structure. At the pivotal point of the behavior of the electronic structure of the actinide series is plutonium. Pu has the most complex phase diagram of all metals, both with regard to the intricacy of the crystal structures and the number of different phases. While there are a number of ongoing experimental efforts directed at determining the occupied electronic structure of Pu, there is essentially no experimental data on the unoccupied electronic structure of Pu. We aim to determine the conduction band (unoccupied) electronic structure of Pu and other actinides in a phase specific fashion and emphasizing bulk contributions by using Nano-focussed Bremstrahlung Isochromat Spectroscopy (nBIS). BIS is the high-energy variant of inverse photoelectron spectroscopy (IPES: electron in, photon out), which is essentially the time reversal of photoelectron spectroscopy (photon in, electron out). IPES can be used to follow the dispersion of electronic states in ordered samples. Owing to its low energies, IPES is usually very surface sensitive. However, by working at higher energies, we will sample preferentially for bulk properties, downgrading the impact of surface effects. Thus, from BIS, we would have a direct measure of the conduction band or unoccupied electronic structure of the bulk Pu. By using a nano-focused electron source associated with a SEM, we hope to gather phase specific information from crystallites within polycrystalline Pu samples. We will discuss the experimental arrangement required to carry out such an experiment and our progress in building such a system.
Local Structure and Vibrational Properties of α-Pu, α-U, and the α-U Charge Density Wave

The local atomic environment and vibrational properties of monoclinic α-Pu, orthorhombic α-U, and the α-U charge-density-wave (CDW) modulation are examined by extended x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS). Debye-Waller factors from temperature-dependent EXAFS measurements are fit to a correlated Debye model. The observed Pu-Pu bond Debye temperature is θcD(α-Pu) = 162 ± 5 K for the pure α-Pu phase. The temperature dependence of the U-U nearest neighbor and second nearest neighbor Debye-Waller factors exhibits a sharp discontinuity in slope near TCDW = 43 K, the transition temperature at which the charge-density wave (CDW) in α-U occurs. Our measurement of the CDW using EXAFS is the first observation of the structure of the CDW in polycrystalline α-U.
Isothermal δ / α′ Transformation and TTT Diagram in a Plutonium Gallium Alloy

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is used as an alternative approach to determining the time-temperature-transformation (TTT) diagram for the martensitic delta to alpha-prime transformation in a Pu-2.0 at% Ga alloy. Previous work sugests that the TTT diagram for a similar alloy exhibits an unusual double-C curve for isothermal holds of less than 100 minutes. Here, we extend this diagram to 18 hours, and confirm the double-C curve behavior. When the sample is cooled prior to the isothermal holds, the delta to alpha-prime transformation is observed as several overlapping exothermic peaks. These peaks are very reproducible, and they are believed to be the result of different kinds of delta to alpha-prime martensitic transformation. This may be due to the presence of different nucleation sites and/or different morphologies.
